An ice dam forms when conditions are just right. Ice builds up on the edge of a roof and the snow and ice behind it melt and run down into the building. Usually it's a sign that a roof needs work, but of course the work can't be done until spring. All you can do is hack away the ice dam, let the water out, and wait for it to happen again. Water was pouring into my kitchen so I called my friendly roofer,
