For you in warm climates, the roof wires keep ice dams from forming. Ice dams are mounds of ice at the edges of a roof. If a building is heated, its warm roof can melt snow and ice on the roof. Then water can build up behind an ice dam and get beneath the shingles. From there it can make its way inside a building. Not good at all.
